“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? … Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.” – Psalm 27:1, 3
What’s your biggest fear? One of my close friends is terrified of spiders. Just talking about them sends a chill up his spine. Most teens I know react the same way when I say the word “Spinach.”
I wonder what makes you shiver in fear. For David, it was the very real fear of being killed in battle. Much of his life was spent away from home, running from kings and hiding from armies. His life was threatened day and night. And yet, he never froze in fear or crumpled to the ground in defeat. How did he overcome his fears, and how can we do the same thing?
David had something that most of us wish we had more of: confidence. But his confidence wasn’t in himself, like that one kid we all know who never feels awkward or self-conscious. David was confident in His God. He realized just how powerful God was, and with God on his team, victory was guaranteed.
We begin to experience victory over our greatest enemies when we remember who God is and that He’s our most powerful teammate. He is Almighty and stronger than we can imagine. The odds are stacked in our favor – God can give us victory over our greatest fears and enemies – even spinach! So who is God to you? Make a list and put it somewhere you can see it. Trust me, it’ll give you the confidence you need to face any enemy.
